Washington, DC - Four-year scientific research grant in correctional postsecondary education (2007-2011)
Northstar wrote and secured a two million dollar grant for the Correctional Education Association (CEA) from the US Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. This research project (2007-2011) is studying the impact of postsecondary education on offenders regarding several critical outcomes: institutional behavior, continuing education, post-release employment, and recidivism. National Reentry Round Table at John Jay College in New York this spring. Seven presenters were chosen nationwide to present on seven topics regarding correctional education and reentry. Northstar was selected to write a paper and present on Effective Use of Technology in Correctional Education. The audience included practitioners, policy-makers, legislators, and researchers (2008).
Northstar co-founders Cindy Borden and Penny Richardson bring 32 collective years of managing and evaluating correctional education programs. Northstar provides multiple services to correctional education agencies throughout the United States including:
- program evaluations
- grant writing
- scientifically-based field research
- curriculum design and development
- school and program improvement consultation
- funding source identification for special projects
- professional development
- presentations at correctional education conferences
With experience in multiple grants including Adult Basic Education (ABE), Carl Perkins, Incarcerated Youth Offender, Incarcerated Individuals Program, Even Start Family Literacy, Life Skills for State and Local Prisoners, and Library Services, Northstar’s Borden and Richardson have extensive knowledge of Federal and State Aid administered by the U.S. Department of Education. Familiarity with state and federal reporting systems is critical to the successful implementation and evaluation of federal and state programs.
