Course Title: Off The Cuff, An Introduction to Prison Education

Have you ever considered teaching in prison? Tired of giving up evenings and weekends for extracurricular activities? Correctional Education is a fascinating field and can offer a new career track for teachers and principals. Explore the rewarding and little-known field of Correctional Education and what it takes to be a prison educator. Learn why educating inmates is important. Learn about the distinctive culture of prison education and providing life-changing opportunities to incarcerated students eager to better themselves.
Meeting times: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday (6/18), Tuesday (6/19), Wednesday (6/20). The remaining three hours will be online. Instructions for online work will be given during class meetings.
Registration Deadline: June 8, 2012. A $50 deposit is required to register. The remaining balance is due the first day of class. Northstar accepts personal checks, purchase orders, or money orders.

Minimum class size: A minimum of 20 is required for the course. All 20 participants do not have to be from the same school or district. Your deposit is fully refundable if class is cancelled for low enrollment. You will be notified by June 12 if the class is cancelled.
Location: This course will be held in the Snowy Peaks room at Front Range Community College in Westminster, about 15 miles north of downtown Denver and 25 miles west of the Denver airport. The Summit Cafe on the FRCC campus is open during the summer and provides an area for breaks and meals. Several restaurants are within two miles of the college and numerous open space walking trails adjoin the college campus.

Credits: This course offers 3 quarter credits through The Heritage Institute. Participants may also opt for 30 hours of Continuing Education Units.
Cost: The course fee of $420 includes 3 quarter credits. CEU credit is also available for $380. Northstar offers a 10% discount for groups of five or more registering together.

Textbook: None required. Each student will receive a DVD which includes an extensive bibliography and numerous articles providing in-depth insight regarding the world of prison education.

Note about The Heritage Institute:
The Heritage Institute credits are for professional continuing education purposes. Coursework offered by The Heritage Institute may not be accepted by other colleges or universities. Check with your degree program advisor, district administrator, or state department of education to determine if these credits will qualify to your intended purpose.
Professional continuing education quarter credit is offered at the 400 level (upper division). Courses numbered 500 are intended as post-baccalaureate courses appropriate for students who already hold undergraduate degrees.
Continuing Education quarter credits are awarded by Antioch University Seattle. Following are the course requirements weighted for determining the granting of university quarter credit: Antioch University Seattle requires 75% or better to issue quarter credit at the 400 level and 85% or better at the 500 level.
Antioch University Seattle does not award letter grades. Credits are awarded on a credit/no credit basis with credit awarded equivalent to a grade of "C" or higher in 400 level courses, or a grade of "B" or higher in 500 (post-baccalaureate) level courses.
